I've been working 50h weeks oe so and with a new XBOX360 I've been otherwise occupied.

Did you ever get the XBox360 working as a media extender?

Nope. You need a Windows Media Centre PC to play videos. I can play music and display pictures however. If I ever buy a media centre compatible PC I'll have it working in about 10 secs.
